“God never wearies of the precious blood,” Spurgeon says, “nor will His people who know where their salvation lies.” The gospel is far greater than most of us imagine. It isn’t just good news for us—it’s good news for animals, plants, stars, and planets. It’s good news for the sky above and the Earth below. 

I love what Cody Cunningham has to say about the humility of Charles Spurgeon, one of my great heroes. I too read and really enjoyed Dallimore’s book on Spurgeon, one of my favorites as I was writing Spurgeon’s bio to introduce my book We Shall See God.

I think Charles Spurgeon comes as close as anyone I’ve read to articulating what Scripture as a whole reveals. Sadly, though I attended both a good Bible college and a good seminary, I never read Spurgeon or learned anything about him. I’d been a pastor for ten years before I discovered him, and then I couldn’t get enough of him.

There is nothing like the attributes of God to overwhelm us with a sense of eternal perspective as well as to give us comfort and encouragement.

Charles Spurgeon shared this in his sermon “Knowledge. Worship. Gratitude”: "Let us begin to be very thankful, if we have not been so before. Let us praise God for common mercies, for they prove to be uncommonly precious when they are once taken away."

At age 22, as a very young senior pastor of one of the first-ever mega-churches, Spurgeon and his church underwent a terrible tragedy. Throughout his life he struggled with depression. To counteract that depression, he preached much on happiness and was very quick to laugh.
