Een seksueel plaatje wekt in mijn hoofd begeerte op. De wereld, mijn lichaam en de duivel bestoken me met boodschappen: ik zal me een echte man voelen; het zal mijn pijn, teleurstelling en stress doen afnemen; ik zal me gelukkiger voelen. ‘God probeert je alleen maar iets goeds te onthouden,’ fluisteren demonen je in.
Gods Woord ontmaskert de leugen. Het vertelt me dat echt geluk alleen in Christus kan worden gevonden. Aan mij de keuze: vertrouw ik satan of vertrouw ik God?
Ik moet kiezen tussen seksuele fantasieën en intimiteit met God. Ik kan niet allebei hebben. Wanneer ik inzie dat God me blijdschap en plezier geeft die ik niet uit seksuele fantasieën kan halen, is dat een doorbraak. Maar die doorbraak komt alleen wanneer ik me naar God uitstrek en Hem zoek, wanneer ik besef dat fantasieën mij geen echte blijdschap kunnen geven en me van God afhouden.
Wanneer mijn dorst naar blijdschap wordt gelest door Christus, wordt zonde onaantrekkelijk. Ik zeg nee tegen de tijdelijke genoegens van ontucht, niet omdat ik geen genoegens wil, maar omdat ik echte genoegens wil – grotere en blijvende – die alleen in Christus te vinden zijn. John Piper schrijft:
Het vuur van de begeerlijke genoegens moet worden bestreden met het vuur van Gods genoegens. Als we het vuur van de begeerte al een met verbodsbepalingen en dreigementen proberen te bestrijden – zelfs al zijn het de schrikwekkende waarschuwingen van Jezus – zul en we falen. We moeten het bestrijden met de machtige belofte van al esoverstijgend geluk. De vlammetjes van begeerlijk genot moeten verzwelgen in de vuurzee van heilige voldoening.
Wie drinkt van immoraliteit raakt nooit verzadigd (zie Johannes 4: 13). Wie drinkt van Jezus heeft nooit meer dorst (zie Johannes 6: 35). Laat ik mijn dorst lessen door Jezus, of duik ik dieper de zonde in, op zoek naar iets wat er niet is?
De rest van je leven wordt grotendeels bepaald door je antwoord op deze vraag:

Superior Satisfaction
A sexual image lures my mind toward lust. The world, the flesh, and the devil barrage me with messages: I will feel like a man; it will relieve my pain, disappointment, stress; I’ll be happier. “God’s just trying to keep something good from you,” demons whisper.
God’s Word shows the lie for what it is. It tells me that real happiness can be found only in Christ.
I’m left with the choice—trust Satan or trust God.
I must choose between sexual fantasies and intimacy with God. I cannot have both. When I see that God offers me joys and pleasures that sexual fantasies don’t, this is a breakthrough. But that breakthrough will come only when I pursue God, making Him the object of my quest—and when I realize that fantasies are only a cheap God-substitute. Running to them is running from God.
When my thirst for joy is satisfied by Christ, sin becomes unattractive. I say no to the passing pleasures of immorality, not because I do not want pleasure, but because I want true pleasure, a greater and lasting pleasure that can be found only in Christ.
John Piper writes,
The fire of lust’s pleasures must be fought with the fire of God’s pleasures. If we try to fight the fire of lust with prohibitions and threats alone—even the terrible warnings of Jesus—we will fail. We must fight it with a massive promise of superior happiness. We must swallow up the little flicker of lust’s pleasure in the conflagration of holy satisfaction.
Those who drink of immorality are never satisfied (see John 4:13). Those who drink of Jesus are fully satisfied (see John 6:35). I can either have my thirst quenched in Jesus, or I can plunge deeper into sin in search of what’s not there.
