Usually I like best the kind of book I’m currently working on. Overall, I’ve written 28 books, nine of those fiction (though two of those are shorter children’s books), the rest nonfiction. So I write two nonfiction for every fiction. But I enjoy both. They are very different of course, but certain things carry over—the need for clear and engaging language, careful development and research. I have to laugh when people say, “You must really love writing fiction since you don’t have to research.” Right. I probably read eighty books on African American history and racial issues when writing Dominion, because I had a black main character, Clarence Abernathy. Any novel that isn’t well researched isn’t worth reading.
